- Ideal for: Couples, long weekends, first-time independent travelers.
- Duration: 4 Days / 3 Nights
Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & The Leaning Tower
- The Plan: Arrive in Pisa around 1:00 PM (assuming you manage to book a morning flight). Check into an accommodation within walking distance of the center. The afternoon and evening belong entirely to Pisa.
- What Not to Miss: The Field of Miracles (Piazza dei Miracoli) with the iconic Leaning Tower and the Cathedral. If you travel off-season, you can snap those famous photos without fifty other people jumping into your shot.
- Getting from the Airport: Depending on where you are staying, you can easily walk from the Pisa airport into town. Alternatively, you can take a local bus. Skip the Pisa Mover shuttle—it is quite overpriced for the short distance it covers.
Day 2: A Full Day in Florence (The Heart of the Renaissance)
- The Plan: In the morning, hop on a train in Pisa (you can easily find the train station using Google Maps), and in less than an hour, you’ll step out right in the center of Florence. A round-trip ticket costs under €20, and trains run constantly. Buy your train ticket online in advance. I bought mine through Omio.com.
- What Not to Miss: The massive cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (The Duomo), the famous goldsmith bridge Ponte Vecchio, and a breathtaking sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo (the most beautiful viewpoint overlooking the entire city!). In the evening, take the train back to your hotel in Pisa.
WARNING: Buy your museum tickets weeks in advance online! The on-site ticket lines can easily take up to 3 hours!
- Uffizi Gallery (Galleria degli Uffizi): This is where Botticelli’s famous The Birth of Venus and Primavera hang. It is one of the most famous art galleries in the world. Expect to spend at least 2–3 hours here.
- Accademia Gallery (Galleria dell'Accademia): People come here for one main hero—the original statue of Michelangelo’s David. The sculpture is massive and truly takes your breath away in person.
- Pitti Palace & Boboli Gardens (Palazzo Pitti): A giant palace just across the river where the Medici family lived. The gardens are wonderful for a stroll if you need a little break from looking at paintings.
- The Statue of Dante Alighieri.
Day 3: A Seaside Escape to Livorno + Relaxing in Pisa
- The Plan: Spend the morning taking a short train ride from Pisa to the port city of Livorno (the journey takes just 15 minutes!). A one-way train ticket costs around €5.
- What to Experience: Take a stroll along the iconic black-and-white checkered seaside terrace, Terrazza Mascagni, right on the coast. Treat yourself to fresh seafood down at the harbor. It’s a lovely walk from the train station all the way to the sea and back.
- Afternoon: Return to Pisa, pick up some souvenirs (authentic Italian cheese and wine), and enjoy a relaxed evening drink at a local Italian bar. The sunset over the city piazzas is gorgeous, and Pisa is beautiful for an evening stroll.
Day 4: Breakfast & Returning to Reality
- The Plan: No rush this morning. Take a slow walk from your accommodation to grab an excellent Italian coffee and a fresh pastry (cornetto) at a local café. Afterwards, head to the airport for your morning flight back home. You’ll head back to work fully recharged and packed with unforgettable memories!
- Katka's Note: I personally found a local bakery that offered a breakfast combo including a savory ham croissant, coffee, orange juice, and I think even a little sweet treat. It was an excellent price and kept us full for hours.
Practical tips
Practical Travel Tips
- My Top Food Hack: Avoid the restaurants directly next to the Leaning Tower. Walk just 10 minutes into the hidden side alleys to enjoy authentic Italian pizza at half the price. I always use Google Maps to scout out restaurants and bistros based on their ratings. I check their website to look over the prices before deciding. If you aren't used to doing this on the go, feel free to look up and save a few restaurants while you're still at home. (Of course, if you aren't on a tight budget like me, feel free to indulge anywhere!).
- When in Florence, Skip the Tourist Traps: When hunger strikes in Florence, skip the overpriced tourist restaurants and head straight to the Mercato Centrale (Central Market). While the ground floor sells traditional cheeses, cured meats, and olives, the first floor opens up into a massive, modern food hall. There are dozens of stalls making fresh pasta, pizza, steaks, and serving great Italian wine. The prices are fantastic, and the atmosphere is incredible.
- Buy Train Tickets Ahead of Time: Use the Trenitalia app or the Omio website to purchase your tickets to Florence in advance. It saves you from wasting time queuing at the station ticket machines.
- Travel Light: This entire 4-day itinerary can easily be done with just a single small personal item backpack (which is free with your flight ticket). You won’t pay extra luggage fees, and you can walk straight into the city center from the airport upon landing.
- Filter Accommodation by Ratings: Look for stays on Booking.com with a rating of 8.0+. Ideally, find a place within walking distance of both the main train station and the Leaning Tower so you don't have to spend extra money on public transit.
