Accommodation in the USA: Movie-Like Motels, Booking.com, or Airbnb with Locals?

Nineteen nights, several U.S. states, and a different place to stay almost every single day. During our road trip across the American West, we will alternate between classic American motels and rooms rented directly inside the homes of local residents. We booked approximately half of our accommodations through Booking.com.

Most frequently, these are the typical American motels we all know from the movies—long single- or two-story buildings, cars parked right outside the rooms, outdoor corridors, large beds, and occasionally a swimming pool or a striking neon sign. We found the other half through Airbnb. However, we weren’t looking for luxury apartments tailored solely for tourists. Whenever possible, we prefer staying directly with locals. This time, we will be spending several nights sharing a house with American hosts.

How did we search for accommodation in the American West, why did we combine motels with Airbnb, and what did we look out for when booking?

This article was written before our trip. After we return, we will update it with our firsthand experiences, photos, final prices, and reviews of each accommodation.

What Type of Accommodation We Chose for the Road Trip

When embarking on a nearly three-week road trip, we don’t want to stay exclusively in anonymous hotel chains. For us, accommodation is an integral part of the journey itself, which is why we opted for a roughly even combination of:

• Classic American motels, booked mostly via Booking.com.
• Private rooms in the homes of locals, found via Airbnb.
• A few practical places to stay in major cities and near national parks.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that many typical American motels boasted very high ratings, included breakfast, and offered more reasonable prices than standard hotels or standalone apartments.With Airbnb, we specifically looked for genuine homestays—the opportunity to live directly with Americans, get a brief glimpse into their daily lives, and potentially gather local recommendations that you won't find in any tourist guidebooks.

Where We Will Be Sleeping During the Road Trip

Our journey begins on October 28, 2026, in Los Angeles and concludes on November 16 in San Francisco. We selected our accommodations strictly based on our planned route to avoid wasting time on long daily commutes.

With a pace like this, accommodation serves primarily as a practical basecamp. Most of the time, we arrive in the evening, sleep, and continue driving the next morning. Even so, we didn't want to just automatically pick the cheapest room without considering its rating, location, or the safety of the neighborhood.

American Motels Just Like in the Movies

In our opinion, staying in a classic motel simply belongs to an American road trip.Motels were originally created for drivers traveling long distances. Their main advantage was easy parking and quick access to the room. To this day, you can park almost directly in front of your door at many of them.

These are exactly the kinds of motels we know from American movies: a row of rooms side by side, outdoor staircases, an ice machine, a flashing roadside sign, and a parking lot packed with large cars.

Of course, we don’t expect every motel to be a romantic retro stop on Route 66. Some are just ordinary corporate chain locations. However, if the room is clean, the location is safe, and both breakfast and parking are included in the price, it can be one of the most cost-effective accommodation options for a U.S. road trip.

Why We Booked Motels via Booking.com

We use Booking.com primarily for classic motels, hotels, and single-night stays. For most reservations, it allowed us to quickly compare prices, ratings, locations, and cancellation policies.

When making our selection, we focused mainly on:

• The overall guest rating and the newest reviews.
• Room cleanliness and neighborhood safety.
• Free parking and a private bathroom.
• Late check-in options and breakfast included.
• Proximity to our planned route.
• The final price, including all taxes and fees.

We didn't just look at the final score. For American motels, we closely read the most recent reviews to spot recurring issues. A single unhappy review might not mean much, but if multiple guests mention dirt, noise, bedbugs, car break-ins, or an unsafe neighborhood, it’s better to keep looking.

A Motel with Breakfast Can Save Both Time and Money

A pleasant surprise was how many budget-friendly motels include breakfast. We don’t expect a massive hotel buffet; a typical American motel breakfast can be quite simple and may include items such as:

• Coffee and tea
• Toast or bagels
• Cereal
• Yogurt
• Fruit
• Eggs
• Sweet pastries
• Waffles made in a self-service waffle iron

On a road trip, however, it’s not just about the value of the food itself. Having breakfast right at your accommodation can save you dozens of minutes in the morning. You don’t have to look for an open restaurant, wait for your order, or drive somewhere else immediately after waking up.

On some days, we want to hit the road before the standard breakfast hours. Therefore, we always check in advance what time breakfast starts. For sunrise trips or long drives, you cannot always rely on the hotel breakfast.

What We Expect from an American Motel

We didn't select motels as luxury accommodation where we would spend half the day. We expect a clean room, a comfortable bed, a hot shower, safe parking, and the ability to continue our journey early in the morning.

In our opinion, the biggest advantages of motels for a road trip are:

• Easy car access
• Parking right outside the accommodation
• Private room and bathroom
• Quick check-in
• Frequent options for late arrival
• Breakfast often included in the price
• Good location near major roads

A certain disadvantage can be noise from the parking lot, poorer soundproofing, or a less personal environment. However, when we are only staying for a single night, practicality usually wins for us.

And yes—we do hope that at least one of our motels will have exactly that movie-like atmosphere, complete with a neon sign, an ice machine, and doors leading straight out to the parking lot.

Why We Love Airbnb with Locals

We booked the second half of our accommodation through Airbnb. However, we weren’t just looking for an entire apartment where we would never meet the owner.We love staying directly with local people. We don’t mind renting just a private room and sharing part of the house with the hosts. On the contrary—we often find this type of accommodation much more interesting than another hotel room.

Thanks to a homestay, we can catch a brief glimpse into everyday American life. We get to see how locals live, what their houses and gardens look like, and perhaps find out where they go out to eat or which nearby places are worth a visit.

Often, the conversations with the hosts are what we remember most from this type of accommodation. You might only stay for one or two nights, but you leave with a much more personal memory than you would from an anonymous hotel.

Homestays Are Not for Everyone

Living in a house together with a host also has its specific challenges. Guests must respect the household rules, quiet hours, guidelines for using the kitchen, or the agreed arrival time.

Before booking, we therefore checked:

• Whether we would have a private or a shared bathroom
• If the host actually lives in the house
• Kitchen availability
• Parking options
• Rules regarding late returns
• Check-in and check-out times
• The presence of pets
• Reviews regarding communication with the host
• The privacy of the room
• The final price, including service and cleaning fees

Some people might find it uncomfortable to enter a stranger's house in the evening and share spaces with people they have never seen before. For us, this way of traveling is ideal. We aren't just looking for a bed, but also for an opportunity to experience the country a bit differently.

Booking.com vs. Airbnb in the USA

Neither platform is automatically cheaper or better. It all depends on the location, dates, length of stay, and the type of accommodation. For a single night during a long drive, a motel usually makes more sense to us. However, when we have two or three nights in one place, an Airbnb with more space, a fridge, or kitchen access can be much more comfortable.

Is Airbnb in the USA Cheaper Than a Motel?

Not always. On Airbnb, the initial price shown might look great, but the final amount is increased by service fees, cleaning fees, or local taxes. Furthermore, a cleaning fee is much easier to absorb during a longer stay than for a single night.With motels, on the other hand, you might face additional charges for parking, local taxes, or a mandatory resort fee. This is especially important to look out for in Las Vegas and other tourist cities.

Therefore, we always compared the final price of the entire stay, not just the nightly rate displayed in the search results. If a motel cost only slightly more than a private room on Airbnb but offered a private bathroom, breakfast, and free parking, it ended up being the better deal. Elsewhere, Airbnb won because it offered better reviews, a quieter location, and the chance to live directly with locals.

How Much Accommodation Costs in the American West

The price of accommodation varies significantly by region. The most expensive areas tend to be major cities and locations in the immediate vicinity of national parks. A specific day of the week, a holiday, or a local event can also make a huge difference.

We are traveling at the turn of October and November, which is outside the peak summer season. Thanks to this, we managed to find several motels with very good ratings, breakfast, and surprisingly reasonable prices.

We paid the closest attention to prices in the following areas:

• San Francisco
• Las Vegas
• The Zion area
• Moab
• Page
• The Yosemite area
• Gateway towns near other national parks

Why We Are Not Staying Directly Inside the National Parks

Accommodation inside U.S. national parks can offer stunning locations, but it is often expensive and must be booked a long time in advance. That is why we will mostly sleep in surrounding towns, such as Moab, Page, Panguitch, Hurricane, or Fresno and its vicinity. This means a longer morning commute, but at the same time, a significantly wider selection of accommodation and more acceptable prices.

When choosing, we calculated not just the distance in kilometers, but also the actual driving time to the entrance or the first spot in the park. In U.S. national parks, the distance between the entrance gate and a specific viewpoint or trailhead can easily be several dozen kilometers.

Therefore, a cheaper room might not be worth it if it means spending an extra two hours in the car every day.

What to Watch Out for When Booking Accommodation in the USA

• The Final Price: In the USA, taxes and other fees are often added to the base rate. Always compare the final amount right before confirming the reservation.
• Parking: Roadside motels often offer free parking. In big cities, however, it can cost dozens of dollars per night. We will definitely verify the price of parking in San Francisco before we arrive.
• Resort Fees: Some hotels, particularly in Las Vegas, charge a mandatory resort fee. This fee can significantly alter an initially cheap room rate.
• Airbnb Cleaning Fees: For short stays, the cleaning fee can make up a substantial part of the total price. Therefore, Airbnb might not be the cheapest option for a single night.
• Arrival Time: Plans can easily change or get delayed on a road trip. That’s why we looked for motels with a 24-hour front desk or late check-in options. For Airbnbs, we preferred to write to the hosts in advance, letting them know that our exact arrival time might be affected by traffic and our schedule during the day.
• Cancellation Policies: Some cheaper offers are non-refundable. For important stops, we preferred at least partially flexible conditions, as a road closure or weather change can impact the entire itinerary.
• Heating and A/C: The American West is not just a hot desert. At the turn of October and November, we might experience warmth in Death Valley, but also freezing temperatures at the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, or in Yosemite. In the reviews, we therefore checked for a working heater, not just air conditioning.
• Location and Safety: A low price alone is not enough. We checked the surroundings of the accommodation, the latest reviews, and comments regarding parking or safety. At the same time, we will not leave any visible electronics, luggage, or other valuables in the car overnight.

How We Selected Accommodation Step by Step

First, we created a precise itinerary and identified the towns where we needed to spend the night. Only after that did we start comparing Booking.com and Airbnb.

Our Process Was as Follows:

• Compare options on Booking.com and Airbnb.
• Set a minimum acceptable guest rating.
• Check the most recent negative reviews.
• Verify parking and check-in times.
• Compare the final price, including all fees and taxes.
• Check the distance from our planned route.
• Save the address and reservation terms.

For places where we are staying only one night, we prioritized simplicity. For longer stays, factors like the atmosphere, contact with the host, and the ability to feel at home—even if only for a short while—played a much bigger role.

What We Expect from the Combination of Motels and Homestays

What we love most about this accommodation approach is the variety. One night, we can park right in front of our room at a typical motel on Route 66, and the next evening, we can be sitting in the kitchen of an American home, chatting with our hosts.

Motels allow for quick and practical transit, while Airbnb homestays will hopefully offer us a more personal perspective on life in the USA. Combining both options seems absolutely ideal for this kind of road trip.

We don’t expect luxury. Most days, we will be out from morning until night, using the accommodation primarily to sleep. Even so, we want every place to be clean, safe, and, if possible, have something that makes it memorable.

The most important thing is not to rely on the assumption that Airbnb is always cheaper and a motel is always lower quality. In our search, that was definitely not the case. Some motels surprised us with very high ratings, breakfast, and excellent prices.

Our Expectations Before the Trip

We are curious to see if American motels will truly look just like they do in the movies, and whether their breakfasts will save our early mornings before heading out to the national parks.However, we are even more excited about staying with Americans. We love homestays precisely because a journey is not just about the famous landmarks. Thanks to local people, we can experience a bit of the everyday life of the country—something you just can't see from a hotel room.
