Orlík Reservoir: Stunning Views and a Mysterious Past

Most people associate Orlík with its impressive castle overlooking the water or the famous Žďákov Bridge, once notorious because of the infamous "barrel murders" that shocked the country decades ago.

We came here for something completely different.

We came to relax, explore, and experience Orlík from the water.

Discovering Orlík by Paddleboard

Seeing Orlík from a paddleboard is a completely different experience.

Only from the water can you truly appreciate the towering rock walls plunging deep beneath the dark surface. From the shoreline, it's impossible to grasp their scale.

When most people think of Orlík, they picture the castle or the massive dam.

But once you inflate your paddleboard and launch from one of the hidden rocky coves, Orlík reveals an entirely different side.

It suddenly feels less like a Czech reservoir and more like a wild Scandinavian fjord, surrounded by steep cliffs and untouched forests.

The Perfect Escape from Everyday Life

Orlík is enormous, with countless bays and kilometres of shoreline.

For many visitors, it's associated with holiday cottages, marinas, and motorboats.

We always look for quiet places where we can slow down, reconnect with nature, and recharge after busy weeks at work.

Out on the water, everything feels different.

The massive cliffs rising straight from the deep water quickly remind you how insignificant everyday office worries really are.

Where to Launch Your Paddleboard

With so many kilometres of shoreline, choosing the right starting point makes all the difference.

For paddleboarding, we recommend avoiding the busy marinas and launching from quieter areas, such as:

• Podolsko
• Žďákov Bridge
• Radava

Before heading out, we always pack our camera, snacks, and valuables into a waterproof dry bag from Decathlon, securely fastened to the front of the board.

Once on the water, stay close to the rocky shoreline.

This is where the Vltava River carved the reservoir's most spectacular scenery before the valley was flooded.

Paddling Beneath the Žďákov Bridge

One of the absolute highlights is paddling directly beneath the iconic Žďákov Bridge.

Only from a paddleboard do you truly realise the incredible size of this engineering masterpiece.

Stopping beneath the enormous steel arch, looking straight up while traffic rumbles overhead, is an unforgettable experience.

Above you, cars race across the bridge.

Below, the water remains perfectly calm and silent.

The contrast is remarkable.

Hidden Coves and Peaceful Moments

One of the greatest pleasures at Orlík is exploring its countless narrow side coves.

Many of these hidden inlets are inaccessible to larger boats.

Paddling into one feels like entering another world.

Trees lean over the water, creating natural green tunnels.

The wind disappears.

The water becomes perfectly still.

All you hear are the gentle drops falling from your paddle.

It's the perfect place to stop, sit quietly on your board, and simply watch the cliffs reflecting on the surface.

Things to Watch Out For

Large Waves

Orlík is very popular with motorboats and sightseeing cruises.

Whenever a larger boat passes, it creates long rolling waves.

If you're paddling with two people on one board—as we usually do—the safest approach is to face the waves head-on and slightly bend your knees.

It quickly becomes an excellent balance workout.

The Depth Beneath You

The flooded canyon is dozens of metres deep.

Hidden beneath the surface lie former villages, roads, and even churches that disappeared when the reservoir was created.

It gives Orlík a unique atmosphere—beautiful, mysterious, and perhaps just a little unsettling.

Final Thoughts

Orlík reminded us once again why it's one of our favourite paddleboarding destinations.

All it takes is a paddleboard, a short drive south of Prague, and a willingness to leave everyday life behind.

The reward?

Towering cliffs, peaceful hidden coves, a good physical workout, and complete freedom on the water.
