We’ve bought the flights. We have our day-by-day itinerary ready. And inside us is a huge mix of absolute excitement and total exhaustion. If you’ve been following our blog since the beginning, you might only see the beautiful photos and ideas for trips. But the reality behind the scenes is much less glamorous. This blog isn’t created in cafés. It comes together in the evenings and late at night, with eyes burning from staring at a screen and a head exhausted from work — the kind of work where you can’t simply wash the emotions away in the shower.
Working for the police isn’t just a job, it’s practically a diagnosis. It can be extremely mentally demanding. You deal with people’s lives, stress and situations you simply don’t want to bring home with you — but somehow they follow you home anyway. When the shift ends, when there’s no new case, and that whole world stays behind me as the door slams shut, I have two options. Either completely switch my brain off with a workout, escape onto the water, or sit straight down at the computer.
And lately, I usually choose the computer.
I sort photos, edit videos, write articles and think about what comes next. As if I hadn’t already written enough official decisions and police reports at work.
Quite often, there is absolutely no energy left. You’re running on fumes, but one thing keeps pushing us forward — the vision of freedom and this blog, which is, figuratively speaking, our shared baby :D. Mine and my partner’s.
The feeling that everyone goes to the USA these days (How the hell are we supposed to be original?)
When we first started planning our road trip through the American West, we were incredibly excited.
And then the social media algorithms kicked in.
A few searches were enough, and now Instagram, TikTok and Facebook feed us videos from America from morning until night. Sometimes it feels like half the world travels to the USA as casually as we would go away for a weekend in the Šumava Mountains.
And that’s when the doubts start creeping in.
You sit at your computer, exhausted after a shift, and think:
“Is this even worth it? Does it make sense to write about places where thousands of people have stood before us and where hundreds of videos have already been filmed? Will we even have anything original to offer our readers?”
But then I remind myself that there are people in the world who may never get the chance to visit these places — and I’m lucky enough to be going there. So I should appreciate every second of it!
And we realised one important thing.
Everyone may have the same photo from Horseshoe Bend, but nobody has taken it through our eyes or with our story behind it.
And most importantly, we’re going at a time when several things come together to make this autumn truly special.
So what will make it different?
100 years of Route 66 (1926–2026): The legendary “Mother Road” celebrates its centenary this year. We’ll drive some of its most beautiful sections through Oatman, Seligman and Williams in the exact year of this huge anniversary. We want to soak up the nostalgia of old neon signs, rusty Chevrolets and diners where time seems to have stopped.
A real American Halloween: Experiencing Halloween in the USA has been on our bucket list since childhood. We’ll spend it right in the heart of Flagstaff. We’re already both terrified and excited about the crazy costumes, decorated desert motels and the atmosphere we’ve only ever known from movies.
The soft autumn light of the desert: By October, places like Joshua Tree and Death Valley no longer feel as though they are trying to burn you alive. The light is perfect for photography, while the air in the mountains is crisp and clear.
Why the USA again?
Stories of escaping in search of freedom, wild landscapes and rock music — that is the essence of the America we love.
We’re not attracted to resorts. We love wild nature, monumental mountains, desert extremes, country and rock music — which also means that one day we’re planning a trip to Nashville, Tennessee.
The American West is basically the mecca of everything we love.
In the car, we’ll be listening to rock, metal and incredible music from the 1950s and 1960s. That’s also why our journey begins in LA with a very clear goal.
Music belongs to a road trip just as much as petrol belongs in the tank.
And then there’s one incredible film: Thelma & Louise.
This iconic movie about absolute escape, friendship and the desire for freedom left a deep impression on me. When those two women race through the desert landscapes of Utah and Arizona in their blue convertible, surrounded by towering red rocks and leaving all the worries of ordinary life behind them...
That is exactly the feeling of freedom we are going there to find.
I want to stand in the places where this cult classic was filmed and, for just a moment, feel that same rush of complete liberation.
But we won’t be driving into the Grand Canyon :D.
What can you look forward to on the blog?
Putting this itinerary together wasn’t easy, even though you can find millions of ideas online. Everyone enjoys different things. There are places where we want to stay longer and others we don’t feel such a strong need to see.
But our journey will begin here:
- California: From the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in LA — where we also have one very personal rock-related stop planned — to giant sequoias and the iconic Tunnel View in Yosemite.
- Arizona: The monumental depths of the Grand Canyon, the perfect horseshoe shape of Horseshoe Bend and the magical Antelope Canyon.
- Utah: The Martian landscapes around Moab, the bizarre rock formations of Bryce Canyon and Zion.
- Nevada: The fiery landscapes of Valley of Fire, sinful Las Vegas, the engineering marvel of Hoover Dam and the salt flats of Death Valley.
Of course, this is only a tiny glimpse of what we’re actually going to visit.
So come along with us.
We’re building this project at a time of enormous competition, when some creators have been doing this for years and years and are miles ahead of us.
But everyone had to start somewhere, and every beginning...
We’ll bring you a perspective that is ours — and that is exactly how it should be.
Now all that’s left is to get through the final few weeks of work, pack our backpacks and set off.
The real adventure is only just beginning :).
