Yet, in both cases, it was a straightforward car rental for a holiday. This is exactly why it is never a good idea to assume that car rental policies are the same everywhere. They aren't, and the differences can be massive.

The Price of the Car Isn't Everything

When choosing a rental car, we never look only at the cheapest offer anymore.Imagine two cars. The first one costs a few hundred CZK less, but the rental company requires a high security deposit, has worse ratings, and less favorable terms. The second car is slightly more expensive, but it has a lower deposit and better pickup conditions.Today, we would often choose the second option. The cheapest price on the first screen does not necessarily mean the best deal.

What We Check Before Booking a Car

When choosing a vehicle via DiscoverCars, we focus primarily on the following:

Our Firsthand Experiences Across Different Countries

Our Experience in North MacedoniaIf we had to pick the easiest car pickup we have experienced so far, it would probably be North Macedonia. The entire process was incredibly fast—no lengthy paperwork and no security deposit. We received the keys, a bit of basic info, and were ready to go. After a long journey, this is exactly the process you want. You don't want to spend another hour at a counter; you just want to grab the car and drive.

Florida Was Also Very Fast

We had a similarly positive experience in Florida. The car pickup was quick and went smoothly without any unnecessary complications. When traveling around the USA, a car is often the foundational base of the entire trip, so we appreciated not having to deal with a lengthy process after landing and being able to just keep moving. The speed of picking up a car can be much more important after a long flight than it seems during the planning phase.

And Then Came Armenia

We had the exact opposite experience in Armenia. We landed in the early hours of the morning, exhausted, and naturally wanted to pick up the car and leave as quickly as possible. However, the process dragged out significantly. There was endless paperwork, waiting, and an overall lengthy handover process.That is exactly the moment you realize that booking through the same comparison website does not guarantee the same experience at the counter. DiscoverCars helps you find and book the offer, but the actual vehicle handover is conducted by the local rental company. And the differences between individual companies can be truly massive.

DiscoverCars is Not a Car Rental Company

This is a very important point to emphasize. The fact that we had a fantastic pickup experience in North Macedonia and a very slow one in Armenia doesn't mean that DiscoverCars itself changed dramatically. The difference lay primarily in the specific local rental company and their on-site conditions.

We use DiscoverCars mainly as an intermediary for:

We then pick up the actual car from a specific car rental company. For this reason, it always pays off to look not just at the price of the car, but also at the rating of the specific supplier.

Does It Make Sense to Pay Extra for a Better Rental Company?

In our opinion, sometimes yes. When it comes to cars, we try to find a reasonable compromise. We don't want to overpay unnecessarily, but at the same time, we no longer automatically choose the cheapest option.If the price difference is relatively small and one company offers:

• Significantly better ratings
• A lower security deposit
• Simpler terms and conditions
• Better opening hours
• Or a more straightforward pickup process

...it usually makes sense for us to pay slightly more. On a holiday costing tens of thousands of CZK, we feel it makes little sense to save a few hundred CZK only to deal with car-related issues for several hours.

Always Read the Terms Before Picking Up the Car

We highly recommend doing this regardless of who you book your car through. Before your trip, double-check your:

• Documents and driver's license
• International driving permit (if required)
• Payment card and the security deposit amount
• Pickup location and opening hours
• Fuel policy and insurance terms

Most importantly, check whether the rental counter is located directly inside the airport terminal, or if a shuttle ride to an off-site location is required after arrival. When landing at two or three o'clock in the morning, this makes a substantial difference.

We Always Take Photos of the Car Upon Pickup

Before driving away from the rental lot, we walk around the car and take photos of it, ideally from all sides. If we spot a scratch, a dent, or any pre-existing damage, we want to have our own photographic evidence.

It only takes a few minutes, but it can save you from later arguments about whether the damage occurred during your rental period. We follow the exact same procedure for the interior and, depending on the situation, we photograph the fuel gauge status as well.

To give you an idea of how much experiences can vary: in Jordan, for instance, nobody even asked to see an international driving permit, and they didn't care at all that the car was completely covered in desert sand. On the other hand, in Armenia, the staff made a huge fuss about us returning the car dirty (there was some mud on the tires). In the end, we worked out a deal: they let it slide in exchange for a positive online review from us! :D So, deal closed.

How We Choose a Car via DiscoverCars

Our current process is quite straightforward. First, we enter:
