Parking at Universal Studios Orlando: How We Saved Money with Cinemark

Driving to Universal Orlando Resort and not thrilled about paying another chunk of money just to leave your car in a parking garage all day?

We get it.

After park tickets, food and probably a few souvenirs, parking is just one more expense that can make a single day at Universal surprisingly expensive.

During our visit, though, we found a simple trick:

we bought two movie tickets at Universal Cinemark at CityWalk and got the cost of regular parking refunded.

Because we visited on a Tuesday, when Cinemark offered discounted tickets, the whole thing actually worked out cheaper than simply paying for parking.

And no, we never even went to the movie.

Where do you park at Universal Orlando?

If you are driving to Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure, you will use the large shared parking complex at Universal Orlando Resort.

From the parking garages, you walk through security and into Universal CityWalk, and from there continue on foot to the entrance of the parks.

So there is no need to look for a separate parking lot directly in front of Universal Studios Florida.

The whole system is very well organized and staff will direct you to a specific section of the garage.

One thing we definitely recommend:

take a photo of your parking level, section and row number.

After spending the whole day walking around the park, the last thing you want is to spend another 30 minutes trying to find your rental car among hundreds of others.

How much does parking at Universal Orlando cost?

Parking prices can change, so it is always worth checking the current rates on the official Universal Orlando website before your visit.

Universal offers standard Regular Parking, as well as more expensive options such as Preferred Parking and valet parking.

For a normal full-day visit, regular parking is absolutely enough.

And this is exactly the type of parking that may qualify for the Cinemark refund.

How does the Cinemark parking trick work?

Inside Universal CityWalk, you will find Universal Cinemark at CityWalk and XD.

Universal has offered a parking refund for guests who buy at least two qualifying matinee movie tickets at the cinema. The exact rules can change, so always check the current conditions before your visit.

The basic process is simple:

Pay for regular parking when you arrive.

Keep your parking receipt.

Buy at least two qualifying matinee tickets at Universal Cinemark.

Present the cinema tickets together with your parking receipt.

If you meet the current requirements, the regular parking fee is refunded.

We used this during our visit to Universal Studios Florida and it worked perfectly.

Why Tuesday can be the best day

We visited Universal on a Tuesday.

And that turned out to be a very good choice.

Cinemark runs Discount Tuesdays, with reduced ticket prices at participating cinemas. Universal Cinemark has also taken part in these Tuesday promotions.

So our calculation was very simple:

two discounted movie tickets cost less than regular parking.

We bought the two cinema tickets, received the parking refund and ended up paying less overall than if we had simply paid the full parking fee and done nothing else.

And yes:

we never actually watched the movie.

Spending two hours inside a cinema during our only day at Universal Studios did not exactly make sense to us.

Do you actually have to watch the movie?

In our case, no.

We needed to buy the qualifying tickets and present the required documents for the refund.

Nobody checked whether we later sat down inside the cinema.

So after buying the tickets and sorting out the refund, we simply continued with our day at Universal Studios.

That said, promotions and conditions can change.

Always check the current rules directly with Universal Orlando and Cinemark before relying on this strategy.

Watch the showtime

You cannot necessarily buy tickets for any random movie at any random time.

The parking refund is usually connected to qualifying matinee showtimes, which means specific daytime screenings.

So before buying the cheapest tickets you can find, check:

• whether the selected showtime qualifies,
• whether at least two tickets are required,
• whether the refund applies to Regular Parking,
• where exactly you need to present the parking receipt.

And most importantly:

Keep your parking receipt

Do not throw it away.

Without it, the whole plan may fail before it even starts.

We would actually recommend taking a photo of the receipt as backup and keeping the physical copy safely in your wallet.

Is Cinemark always worth it?

Not necessarily.

Do the math first.

If two movie tickets cost almost the same as the parking fee, there is little point in going through the extra steps just to save a few dollars.

For us, however, the combination of:

Tuesday + Discount Tuesdays + Regular Parking refund

made financial sense.

And on a road trip, where you are constantly paying for hotels, fuel, attractions, parking and food, even small savings begin to add up.

Another option: arriving later in the evening

Universal has also offered free or reduced parking later in the evening, although special events such as Halloween Horror Nights may have different rules.

So if you are only visiting CityWalk in the evening, parking may work differently than it does during a full day at the parks.

For a standard full-day Universal visit, though, you will probably arrive in the morning, so this option is less useful.

Our strategy: Cinemark first, then Harry Potter

If we were planning the day again, we would probably do exactly the same:

1. Arrive before the park opens.
2. Park in Regular Parking and keep the receipt.
3. Sort out the Cinemark tickets according to the current rules.
4. Head straight to Universal Studios Florida.
5. Go to Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts first.

Then forget about parking and enjoy the rest of the day.

Because if you are trying to see Universal Studios Florida in a single day, you do not want to spend the first two hours worrying about where you parked or how the parking system works.

Was it worth it?

Yes.

It was not the kind of saving that paid for half our Florida trip.

But it was one of those small travel hacks where you think:

“If the option exists, why pay more?”

And because we visited on a Tuesday, when the movie tickets were discounted, it worked out even better.
