North Macedonia and Kosovo are a great combination for a road trip. Distances are relatively short, having a car gives you access to places that can be difficult to reach by public transport, and you can easily combine Skopje, Mavrovo, Prizren, Pristina and other destinations in one trip.
However, if you are travelling in a rental car from North Macedonia, you cannot simply enter Kosovo into Google Maps and drive straight to the border.
Before your trip, you need to arrange a few documents, get permission from the rental company and make sure the car is properly insured.
We crossed the border between North Macedonia and Kosovo in a rental car ourselves, and in the end it was much easier than it initially sounded.
The most important thing is to arrange everything before you reach the border.
Can you take a rental car from North Macedonia to Kosovo?
Yes – but not automatically.
Before booking your car, check whether the rental company allows its vehicles to enter Kosovo.
Rules vary considerably between rental companies. Some allow travel to Kosovo without any major issues, others charge an additional cross-border fee, and some may prohibit their vehicles from entering certain countries altogether.
The safest option is therefore to contact the rental company before booking and ask directly:
Can we take this rental car from North Macedonia into Kosovo?
We already knew that we wanted to visit Kosovo when we rented our car in North Macedonia, so we informed the rental company in advance.
We strongly recommend doing the same.
What documents do you need from the rental company?
Tell the rental company clearly that you are planning to cross the border into Kosovo.
Depending on the company, they will prepare the documents required for international travel.
You will usually need:
- written permission or authorisation from the rental company to take the vehicle abroad,
- vehicle registration documents,
- your rental agreement,
- insurance documents,
- and possibly a Green Card, depending on the rental company's requirements.
This is where things can become slightly confusing.
A Green Card is not the same as Kosovo border insurance
The Green Card is an international certificate showing that a vehicle has valid third-party liability insurance.
Your rental company may provide one as part of the paperwork required for travelling abroad.
However, Kosovo is not part of the international Green Card system.
This means that a standard European Green Card does not replace the local insurance required when entering Kosovo.
In practice, you therefore need to think of these as separate things:
permission from the rental company + vehicle documents
↓
insurance documents / Green Card provided by the rental company
↓
Kosovo border insurance
How much does car insurance at the Kosovo border cost?
Vehicles entering Kosovo may need border insurance, arranged through the Kosovo Insurance Bureau.
For a normal passenger car, the shortest policy is usually the most useful option for tourists visiting Kosovo for only a few days.
At the time of writing, the official tariff for a passenger vehicle is:

For a typical short road trip, the 15-day policy for €15 is therefore enough.
Insurance can be arranged when entering Kosovo and may also be available online.
Important: Prices and rules can change, so always check the latest information before your trip.
What about the rental company's cross-border fee?
This is separate from Kosovo border insurance.
Your rental company may charge its own:
cross-border fee / international travel fee
for allowing you to take the car outside North Macedonia.
There is no standard price.
Some smaller rental companies may include international travel in the rental price or charge only a relatively small fee. Others charge separately for each country, and fees with larger international rental companies can be considerably higher.
Before booking, we recommend asking for written confirmation of:
- whether Kosovo is permitted,
- how much the cross-border fee is,
- and which documents will be provided.
Our experience
We paid 30 € to the rental company for permission to take the car across the border.
You then need to add the cost of Kosovo border insurance.
Documents we recommend carrying
Before arriving at the border, keep all your paperwork together and easily accessible.
We recommend having:
passport or ID card
driving licence
rental agreement
vehicle registration documents
written permission from the rental company to enter Kosovo
Green Card / insurance documents provided by the rental company
Kosovo border insurance
We personally prefer travelling with a passport when doing a multi-country Balkan road trip, even where an ID card may be accepted.
It simply makes border crossings easier and avoids unnecessary complications.
Which border crossing should you use?
If you are driving from Skopje towards Pristina, the most straightforward route is via:
Blace – Hani i Elezit
The border is very close to Skopje and this is the most obvious route if you are travelling north into Kosovo.
If you are travelling through western North Macedonia, for example around Tetovo or Mavrovo, another possible crossing is:
Jazhince – Glloboçicë
Always check current border conditions and any temporary restrictions before travelling.
What is the border crossing actually like?
The process itself is quite straightforward.
First, you arrive at the North Macedonian border checkpoint and present your documents.
You then continue to the Kosovo side.
Because we were travelling in a rental car, we also had the documents supplied by the rental company ready to show.
If border insurance is required, you arrange it when entering Kosovo.
And then you continue your journey.
No drama. No complicated expedition.
The most important part of the whole process actually happens before the trip, when you arrange the rental car and paperwork.
If your documents are in order, the border crossing itself is just a normal administrative procedure.
The biggest mistake: not telling the rental company
We definitely would not recommend simply taking the car into Kosovo without permission.
Even if you manage to cross the border, the real problem could arise later if you:
- have an accident,
- damage the vehicle,
- or the car is stolen.
If your rental agreement prohibits travel to Kosovo and you drive there anyway, you may be violating the rental conditions.
That could also affect your insurance cover.
Saving a few euros on a cross-border fee is absolutely not worth the risk of having to pay for serious damage to a rental car yourself.
So our advice is simple:
Tell the rental company about Kosovo before booking the car.
Ideally, get written confirmation before paying for the reservation.
Is it better to keep the same rental car or rent another car in Kosovo?
For a short road trip, we would definitely prefer to keep the same car if the rental company allows it.
Changing cars at the border would mean:
- returning one rental car,
- crossing the border by bus or another form of transport,
- finding a second rental company,
- paying another deposit,
- carrying all your luggage,
- and adjusting your itinerary around the whole process.
Being able to continue with the same vehicle makes combining North Macedonia and Kosovo in one road trip much easier.
If your rental company allows Kosovo for a reasonable additional fee, we think it is well worth it.
Important if you plan to continue from Kosovo to Serbia
If you are combining several Balkan countries, there is one more important issue to consider.
Kosovo and Serbia have a specific border situation.
Depending on how you entered Kosovo and where you plan to travel next, crossing directly from Kosovo into Serbia can be more complicated.
So if your planned itinerary is:
North Macedonia → Kosovo → Serbia
check the latest official travel advice before your trip.
A route such as:
North Macedonia → Kosovo → North Macedonia
is generally much more straightforward.
Quick checklist before driving from North Macedonia to Kosovo
Before booking, ask whether the rental car is allowed to enter Kosovo.
Check the rental company's cross-border fee.
Get written permission to take the vehicle into Kosovo.
Check all vehicle and insurance documents when collecting the car.
Carry the rental company's authorisation with you.
Budget for Kosovo border insurance – currently €15 for 15 days for a passenger car.
Keep all documents somewhere easy to reach at the border.
Check the latest border and insurance rules shortly before travelling.
